BMW E3 Redivivus

Redivivus is Latin for "come back to life". Accordingly this Blog is mostly about my efforts to turn a 1972 BMW Bavaria into something I personally want to drive. Along the way I might do some ranting and raving and comment on single malt scotch whiskey.

Non Proficio

No progress. Too Cold.
I broke down and ordered a BMW shop manual. It's taking forever to get here. Expensive too.

Minor Rant:
Why are some parts available all over the place and others hard to find? I can get bearings and seals for engines, transmissions and the wheels all over the place. Differential seals are much harder.

ab origine (From the Beginning/Source)

I obtained the Bavaria from a friend for an unbelievably low price. I have been toying with the idea of starting a car project for a while so a cheap entry price with a car that was already drivable was attractive. So here is what I am starting with. (Working on the car started before the blog so the pictures are less than ideal.)

The body is in excellent shape for a 1972 car (Utah actually puts salt on the road in winter!) more on that later. The car was drivable when I got it, but needed some work before I could get it licensed. It needs some brake work; there was major leakage in the power steering hoses; and the exhaust system also needs work.

There are also other things that need to be taken care of:
  • The drivers seat is in bad shape and has a broken spring.
  • There are oil leaks (not bad) in the vicinity of cylinders 1 and 6.
  • There is fairly nasty rust on the driver side front fender
  • There are some other body dings on the hood and in the back.
Looking it over after I got the car I found some other issues:
  • There is rust in the passenger side foot well
  • The transmission may have a leak
  • The differential may have a leak
  • All the usual interior issues (cracked dash, tears in the headliner, carpets are shot.
Nevertheless the interior is mostly in good shape, especially in the back.

The next post will either be about fixing the power steering or fixing the brakes.
